Sushi Cook (Omakase) – Luxury Japanese Dining

Position Type:   Part-Time
Pay:  $20-$22 p/h plus tips

Gansevoort Meatpacking is seeking a talented and passionate   Sushi Cook   to join our luxury dining team. This position is ideal for an experienced sushi professional who takes pride in craftsmanship, precision, and exceptional guest service.

Working alongside our culinary leadership, you will prepare traditional and contemporary omakase-style sushi while engaging directly with guests at our sushi counter. This role combines culinary artistry with hospitality, creating memorable dining experiences in a fast-paced, high-end environment.

What You'll Do

• Prepare premium sushi and omakase dishes with precision and consistency.
• Interact with guests seated at the sushi counter, explaining menu items, ingredients, and preparation techniques.
• Deliver warm, engaging, Forbes-level hospitality throughout the dining experience.
• Set up, stock, and maintain sushi stations before, during, and after service.
• Ensure proper food handling, storage, rotation, and sanitation in accordance with NYC Department of Health regulations.
• Maintain recipe standards, portion control, and presentation quality.
• Collaborate closely with the front-of-house team to provide seamless service.
• Respond professionally to guest requests, dietary restrictions, and special accommodations.
• Maintain a clean, organized workstation throughout service and complete all closing responsibilities.
• Report equipment issues and food safety concerns promptly.
• Support fellow team members and assist with restaurant operations and special events as needed.

What We're Looking For

• Minimum  2 years of sushi preparation experience, preferably in an upscale Japanese restaurant or omakase concept.
• Experience preparing nigiri, sashimi, rolls, and omakase courses with exceptional knife skills and attention to detail.
• Passion for hospitality and creating memorable guest experiences.
• NYC Food Protection Certificate (or ability to obtain one).
• Strong communication skills in English.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
• Professional appearance, strong work ethic, and attention to detail.
• Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and remain active throughout scheduled shifts.
• Frequently lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, grasp, and perform repetitive hand movements.
• Comfortable working in a busy, fast-paced kitchen environment.
